Los Angeles and Long Beach have been making adjustments to their ports in order to bring in larger ships to these areas. One of the changes taking place at the Ports of LA and Long Beach involved lowering all pipelines crossing waterways. This project for ExxonMobil required the installation of a pipeline bundle under the main channel near the East Basin in the Port of Los Angeles. ARB crews horizontally directionally drilled and installed 1800-ft. of 1-24" and 2-10" pipelines. The 3 pipelines were welded up separately in strings and then bundled together as the drilling rig pulled them across. Surrounded by heavy trucking and the loading and unloading of cargo containers, workspace was very limited.
