The HDD Group was in Alaska in 2004, on a project for the Alaska Pipeline Company's 20-inch Beluga Transmission Pipeline Relocation Project. The project involved a horizontal directional drill under the Susitna River and the installation of 4,350-ft of 20-inch pipe.
This work was located in a very remote area west of Anchorage and the Cook Inlet in the Susitna Flats State Game Refuge. 26 miles of ice road was constructed to get to the project location. Two large fabric structures were erected on ice work pads to protect the crew and drilling equipment from sub-zero temperatures. The work was done during February and March, with temperatures ranging between minus 15 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The pipeline was successfully installed and the equipment and structures were demobilized before spring thaw without damage to the sensitive environment.
