Pacific Gas & Electric - Jefferson-Martin 230kV Transmission Project - 15,000 feet of four 6-inch and two 4-inch 230kV conduit system with manholes. San Bruno, California

Pacific Gas & Electric - Portrero-Hunters Point 115kV Transmission Project - 12,000 feet of four 6-inch and two 4-inch 115kV conduit system with manholes. San Francisco, California

The two projects referenced here were worked simultaneously. One in San Francisco and one in San Bruno, California. Although they were close in proximity, each job was constructed with separate crews and supervision.

These projects are located in extremely congested areas with traffic and pedestrians to consider. There were also a large number of substructures to cross. The excavations were 7 to 13 feet deep and solid sheet shoring was required.

The duct systems go through areas that require additional protection, i.e. earthquake fault and Cal Trans zones. ARB fabricated 1-inch rebar cage 2½ feet wide by 4 feet tall for a total distance of approximately 3,000 feet.

All conduit were formed and encased with concrete and the remainder of the trench was backfilled with a fluidized thermal material.

The level of groundwater that was encountered throughout the projects required constant dewatering using strategically placed pumps. All water had to go to Baker Tanks for testing prior to releasing into a storm drain.

These projects were performed under the jurisdiction of California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
